Pooley Wines was established in 1985 when the late Denis and Margaret Pooley planted ten rows of Riesling and seven rows of Pinot Noir on their 16-hectare farm at Cooinda Vale in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. Cooinda Vale Vineyard was established in 1985 by Pooley’s founders, Margaret and Dennis Pooley. Sitting between 80-100m above sea level, the vineyard is tucked away in a nook of hills North of Campania making it much more protected from prevailing weather conditions. Being more continental it also experiences greater extremes in temperatures bringing more frequent frosts, snow and heat waves. The iron lacking grey brown sandy loam over clay subsoils at this site tend to bring a moderate level of struggle to the vines by restricting deep root growth and water accessibility but in turn creates a wine that is more delicate and finer. Named after the second generation John Roy Denis Pooley and sourced from a very small block of Syrah that was planted in 1999 Matt Pooley as a trial block of Syrah looking specifically at climate change and where it would lead Tasmania's wine future. Four rows of this varietal were planted, later expanded to eight rows which is enough to make 2-3 barrels depending on the vintage. 100% destemmed, with wild fermentation for 10 days and pressed to French oak barriques for 14 months. Crunchy notes of bramble, blueberries, violets, and a dusting of white pepper on the nose. A mouth-watering display of aniseed, red liquorice, tobacco leaf, and cocoa continuing on the palate. Brilliant tension, integrated tannins, and layered complexity. Simply wondrous. This wine will continue to develop with careful cellaring. Drink now til 2040.

Etienne offered portions of his estate to various sharecroppers for cultivation. It was not until 1986 when Jean-Nicholas Méo took charge of the estate that a strategic vision was set in motion to reclaim the vineyards from the sharecroppers. Jean-Nicholas aimed to regain control over the land, ultimately leading to the production of estate-grown fruit and bottling under the Méo-Camuzet label. An instrumental figure in this reacquisition process was the iconic Burgundy producer, Henri Jayer. For approximately four decades, Jayer had worked the domaine's land under his own label. Following his retirement in 1988, Jayer graciously provided guidance and advice to Jean-Nicholas during the process of reclaiming the vines. Notably, Méo-Camuzet now proudly holds 14 hectares (35 acres) of vineyards, including a portion of the revered Cros Parantoux Premier Cru site, made famous by Jayer himself. While Méo-Camuzet strives to farm its vineyards as organically as possible, the estate has deliberately chosen not to pursue certification. This decision allows the winemakers the freedom to adapt their approach based on the unique characteristics of each vintage. In addition to their prestigious grand cru wines, Méo-Camuzet also produces a selection of premier cru wines from vineyards along the Côte de Nuits. Furthermore, they offer a range of village-level and Bourgogne wines, ensuring a diverse and exciting collection. Nuits St. Georges Aux Murgers is a wine that requires caution to avoid overpowering its character. Planted between 1965 and 1972, the vineyards produce early-ripening grapes with remarkable acidity. Situated between Vosne and Nuits-St-Georges, the vineyard benefits from an ideal location on the lower part of the hill, facing east. The soil once destoned is fine with sandy elements at the top. The Noble One by De Bortoli is considered Australia's premier dessert wine, and for obvious reasons. The wine has won countless awards at the leading wine shows around the country and has a wonderful propensity to develop even further in the bottle. The 2002 Noble One is a classic expression of the style with rich apricot treacle characters with fig and orange blossom still active on the nose and palate. Hints of vanilla bean and a refreshing acidity on the finish mean this decade old wine will continue to live in the cellar for many years more.
