At the heart of Shaw + Smith's winemaking philosophy is their commitment to owning and carefully managing three distinct vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. Located in Balhannah, Lenswood, and Piccadilly Valley, these vineyards cover a total of 60 hectares. The team at Shaw + Smith firmly believes that the key to producing the highest quality grapes lies in cultivating healthy vines in healthy soils. With a deep appreciation for the potential of the Adelaide Hills, Shaw + Smith's love for Riesling has been a driving force behind their winemaking journey. They firmly believe that this region has the ability to produce exceptional Rieslings with remarkable ageing potential. Such is their dedication to finding the perfect sites for growing Riesling grapes that Shaw + Smith even took a hiatus from producing Riesling between 2010 and 2013. This hiatus allowed them to search for and identify the preferred sites that would meet their exacting standards. In 2014, they found the sites that would become the foundation for their exceptional Riesling production. Understanding that site selection is of utmost importance, Shaw + Smith ensures that their vineyards are meticulously managed. The team employs sustainable vineyard practices, recognizing that a healthy ecosystem is crucial for producing grapes of the highest caliber. This is a “delicately scented” Chardonnay of great subtlety and considerable charm, from two vineyard sites “concentrated with hints of peaches, grapefruits and an array of stonefruit, with a minerally backing in support.” (Ken Gargett Wine Pilot). Chris Coulter practices minimum intervention with his Coulter Wines enterprise, sourcing grapes mainly from the Adelaide Hills, and his Chardonnay is “fine and delicately scented, the bouquet displays notes of crunchy apple, grapefruit, oatmeal, and subtle almond, leading to an elegantly weighted palate that is linear and persistent. The wine is gorgeously structured by bright acidity, finishing refined and complex.” (Sam Kim Wine Orbit).

The fruit for this wine was grown at the Hill Smith Vineyard at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills. The vines at this east-facing vineyard grow in alluvial loam, limestone, shale and quartz, at an altitude of around 400m. Thanks to near-perfect weather, 2021 promises to be one of the best Adelaide Hills vintages in recent memory.

2018 Orlando Lyndale Adelaide Hills Chardonnay,Purity of fruit underlies this wine with an abundance of stone fruit and lemon pith, however it shows plenty of restraint and precision with its tight mineral acid backbone. A multi layered palate with a seamless integration of oak and a harmonious texture that is an outstanding example of modern cool climate Chardonnay.

Birthday Wine Cylinder “Hip Hip Hooray It’s Your Birthday”. Bleasdale's Adelaide Hills Pinot Gris grapes are grown by specialist Adelaide Hills growers. The fruit is handpicked directly into a refrigerated container where it is cooled all day, then delivered to the historic Bleasdale cellars at dusk for whole bunch pressing in the cool of the evening. This delicate wine shows all the spice and perfume we expect from cool climate Pinot Gris. Nashi, ginger and rosewater perfume leads to a generous and textured palate with nutty complexity from the barrel ferment component. A satisfying yet moreish wine, textured and complex middle palate, with a hint of sweetness to complement spicy foods.

Deep red colour, the nose shows lifted Cabernet aromas of cassis, dried herbs and a hint of mint along with subtle sweet oak notes. The palate displays ripe, cool climate Cabernet flavours of blackcurrant and dried herbs and with subtle sweet oak flavours. Medium bodied yet with good concentration of flavour, this wine is well supported with fine grained tannins which give the wine structure and length. Whilst approachable now this wine will reward medium term cellaring of 5 to 10 years.
