Over three generations the Barry name has been famous throughout the wine world and synonymous with the Clare Valley. A founding member of Australia’s First Families of Wine, the Barry family celebrated the 60th anniversary of its winery in 2020, the year it also scooped the title of Halliday’s ‘Winery of the Year’. Jim Barry bought his first vineyard here in 1959, and even helped the Taylor family open their winery a decade later. Son Peter took over Jim Barry in 1985, and today brothers Tom and Sam, with sister Olivia, have raised the bar even higher. Enjoy a new Jim Barry exclusive, an absolutely delicious Single Vineyard Grenache. The grape has become the hottest thing in wine in recent years, with a new generation of winemakers create fresh, super approachable modern styles. When Grenache – rare in the Clare Valley – came up in discussion, buyer Ben Cohn, an ardent devotee of the grape, was stoked. The wine was crafted using fruit from the family’s limestone-rich McKay’s vineyard in Watervale – and sings with fresh red fruit and elegant, sandy tannins. It boasts fresh raspberry & spice on nose & palate with bluefruits, plum & orange rind hints. Great length too. Serve it slightly chilled, and it makes a great match with Thai Pork Belly. With his wines acclaimed by critics worldwide, Diffonty is a household name in the southern Rhône. Fine wine expert and Rhône fan Robert Parker described the Diffonty Cuvée du Vatican Châteauneuf wines as “full-bodied, powerful, rich and oozing unmistakable Provençal character”. Comprising mostly Grenache supported by a little Syrah, the Réserve de l’Abbé is made by Jean-Marc with as much care and attention as he affords his top reds. Using grapes from just outside the Châteauneuf boundary, the wine was fermented in traditional wooden and also stainless steel vats before blending and bottling. It’s sumptuous and velvety, with warming red berry and wild herb complexity. Best decanted early, the wine’s ideal served with a hearty casserole.

Come savour pure, delicious 91pt Sevenhill Inigo Grenache from vines planted in the 1920s, without a hint of oak. Fresh aromas of strawberries, raspberries, cherries and a nice of cinnamon draw you in, leading to a pretty, finely detailed palate showcasing juicy fruits helmed by tart acidity. Another example of why Aussie Grenache is on the rise. "This is super-pale in the glass, and sets off with a magenta hue. Absolutely vibrant aromas, pretty and fresh; a cascade of pink fruit tumbles over itself to waft toward the nose. The palate is detailed, fresh and pretty, without the muscular, billowing density that grenache can achieve. A fine-boned wine that speaks of sumac strawberries, raspberry Freeza icypole, rhubarb pie, salted licorice and blackcurrant pastille... 91pts" (Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion).

For years the Tscharke family has tended their premium Barossa vineyards to supply grapes to famous Penfolds. Today, however, Damien Tscharke is keen to keep the best grapes and make a wine of his own. Tscharke are leading the way with organic wines that reflect the terroir and the personality of the fruit, in this case grenache from the Marananga sub region. This is a deliciously versatile, luscious Barossa Grenache with just a dash of Mourvèdre (aka Mataro) for complexity and freshness. Some lees fermentation added some texture and body. It's super-refreshing and too versatile to bring to mind an ideal food pairing, you just can't go wrong!

Craig Stansborough and Mark Slade started Purple Hands in southern Barossa 2006 from humble beginnings, making just 100 dozen the first vintage. Today "Purple Hands captures the purity and elegance that is possible when the raw materials are in good hands" Dave Brookes, The Halliday Wine Companion. Of this Grenache, Dave says: "Crunchy, bright and airy on the palate with some nice sour cherry twang... a whole lot of inherent drinkability from the word go. Great stuff.”

Grenache is enjoying a well-deserved moment, with a new generation of talented Aussie winemakers delivering deliciously fresh, approachable wines. This McLaren Vale Grenache is a superb example, from the exciting small-batch project Marsc Wine Co. Bringing acclaimed winemakers and prestige vineyards together covertly under a ‘masked’ label, they’re able to deliver great quality wines for brilliantly low prices. We can’t reveal who made this Grenache, but we can say that they have picked up some of Australia’s highest winemaking honours – namely, TWO Bushing Kings and a Jimmy Watson.
