Battery Point Distillery Islay #2 Single Malt Whisky
Product Information: BPD ‘Islay Cask #2’ is the second release from Battery Point Distillery, showcasing the versatility of their new-make spirit. Maturing in casks sourced from two of the giants of Scottish Single Malt Whisky—Laphroaig and Lagavulin—this whisky is further balanced with a dash of second-fill Port and Sherry casks. Remarkably, no peated grain is used in this whisky; the subtle peaty character comes entirely from the exceptional casks. The nose greets you with buttery smooth notes of nougat, manuka honey, peanut brittle, and a hint of smoky bacon. On the palate, expect rich flavours of Werther’s Original caramels, maple syrup, and pine needles, finishing with a delightful touch of peat-smoked almonds. It’s truly spectacular. Bottled at a robust 62.3% ABV, this limited release consists of just 371 bottles. Jack Lark’s visionary approach to cask and barrel influence continues under Luke Lawrence and the production team. Their new-make spirit, known for its oily, malty, and slightly fruity profile, serves as the cornerstone of Battery Point Distillery’s whiskies. Using 100% Tasmanian malt mash and pure Tasmanian water, each batch offers a unique expression, ensuring that no two releases are ever the same. Maker: Battery Point Distillery was born out of a deep passion for Tasmania and a profound respect for the art of whisky distilling. Situated in the heart of Hobart’s historic Battery Point, the distillery specialises in small-batch, handcrafted whiskies matured in carefully selected sherry, tawny, and bourbon casks. Founded by Jack Lark, son of Australian whisky pioneer Bill Lark, the distillery is now helmed by Luke Lawrence, who upholds the same meticulous standards. Each batch showcases distinctive characteristics, reflecting the influence of single, double, or triple cask ageing, offering whisky lovers contemporary expressions of Tasmania’s rich distilling heritage. Philosophy: Battery Point Distillery is nestled within Lenna, a grand mansion built by seafaring merchant Alexander McGregor, overlooking Hobart's docks. Since the mid-1800s, the site has stood as a symbol of wealth, when the McGregor family controlled the largest fleet south of the equator. Today, while nearby pubs buzz with life, the distillery remains a humble, vine-covered shed—a hidden gem of craftsmanship. Inside, a locally built still and an array of 60-litre barrels occupy the space, next to a weathered desk where the head distiller dreams up new creations. Yuza Second Edition Single Malt Japanese Whisky ( Bottling)
Yuza Distillery was established in 2018 and to date has released just two single malts (The First Edition has already picked up Gold at the San Francisco International Spirits Challenge) and is well on the way to becoming one of the country’s newest cult distilleries. Sitting at the base of Mount Chōkai in the heart of Japan’s snow country, Yuza is the first Whisky distillery in the country’s Yamagata prefecture. Operational since November 2018, from day one, Masaharu Sasaki and his young team have drawn on the example laid down by Chichibu’s Ichiro Akuto, to perfect an authentic Japanese Whisky that could compete with the world’s best, while remaining true to their sense of monozukuri and producing Whiskies that are uniquely Yuza. It’s early in the piece and yet all the signs — not least the meticulous attention to detail and limited production — point to Yuza becoming one of the brightest stars in Japan’s Whisky firmament. Yuza sits on the flats near the Sea of Japan and enjoys an abundance of soft water from snowmelt and underground springs fed by the sponge-like crevices of lava of the nearby volcano. Chosen for this purity of water and access to the port for their specialised equipment, the area also experiences a massive 40°C average temperature difference over the year. This is projected to super-charge the maturation of the Whiskies in barrel; Masaharu Sasaki estimates eight years maturing in Scotland will equate to just five years in Yamagata. To hone their craft, the Yuza Distillery team partnered from the start with Forsyths, world leaders in distillation equipment. Yuza’s entire distillery team is fresh to Whisky but nurtured and overseen by the Scottish still-makers, providing an essential blank slate to be moulded to a completely new formula, key to Yuza’s dedication to an unfettered style. Facility equipment is centred around five Canadian Douglas Fir washbacks and two stills, including a Glendronach-inspired spirits still with an extended line arm, designed for more surface contact to give cleaner flavours with fewer sulphites. Dedicated only to Single Malt production, this small operation (the distillery covers just 620 square meters) has passed up the opportunity to release any ‘newborn’ expressions. The wash is currently 100% barley from Crisp Maltings with plans to eventually include a local option. Early bottlings point to a non-peated house style, but several heavily-peated batches have also been laid down. While Yuza’s barrel program remains secretive - even when touring the facility, you’ll find all the barrelheads are painted over - the early signs pointed to a preference for ex-Bourbon barrels. Now there is a portion of Sherry cask in the mix and Masaharu Sasaki has spoken of his desire to increase his inventory, picking up stock whenever he can. This cask strength Whisky was carefully selected from barrels from the first season at Yuza Distillery from February to July 2019. It’s estimated, that this selection could contain up to 80% ex-Sherry barrels. As distinct from the First Edition - a very bright expression raised in ex-Bourbon cask - the Second Edition was blended for more complexity, depth and luxurious flavour. This has a very old-world flavour profile (slightly reminiscent of top-shelf Speyside) and the alcohol sits in excellent balance with the complexity of the spirit. There’s a whisper of peat on the nose, with fragrant cereal notes before a progression towards deeper stone fruits and fig. It’s luscious and oily in the mouth, round and slightly earthy with spice and oat notes. It finishes dry with traces of liquorice and a mineral tang.

Glenfiddich 40 Year Old 'Cumulative Time' Single Malt Scotch Whisky Release No.19
The Glenfiddich Distillery was founded in 1886 by William Grant in Dufftown in the Speyside region of Scotland. The name Glenfiddich derives from the Scottish Gaelic Gleann Fhiodhaich meaning "valley of the deer". Once the spirit has matured, the whisky is cut with pure Robbie Dhu spring water. Glenfiddich has a bottling hall onsite along with a large bottling plant in Bellshill. It is visible in a rocky valley’s many solid strata; laid down over millennia, worn smooth by wind and rain. And with layers comes complexity. Which is why Glenfiddich 40 is so much more than an exemplary single malt. This rare single malt is made through remnant vatting, a pioneering process in which the Glenfiddich malt master carries one batch over, time and again, and marries it with the casks selected for each subsequent release. Cask after cask, season after season, it absorbs the evolving flavours of the passing years. It is time, age, experience accumulated. It’s a unique process that isn’t commonly used. In fact, Glenfiddich is the only distillery that still makes use of the remnant vatting process, which is a testament to the label’s traditional approach to distillation. Since the first release of Glenfiddich 40 Year Old in 2000, its special marrying tun has never been emptied, with some of the previous batch saved to provide the backbone of each new release. This year, Brian Kinsman added two butts and five hogsheads of whisky to the mix, creating a rich and sherry-led expression, weightier than previous editions. The sculptural packaging design is inspired by geological metamorphosis and made from jesmonite (a resin-based material used for sculpture and decoration), which is streaked with both upcycled copper, which represents Glenfiddich’s stills, and green glass, which nods to the ever-popular Glenfiddich 12 Year Old, giving a stone-like appearance. Luxuriously full and silky smooth, with memories of past releases in every nuanced note. Evolving from deep dried fruit notes to rich fruitcake, dates, raisins and stewed apples, with sweet cooking spices and vanilla, before giving way to dry oaky notes, with subtle hints of bitter chocolate and peat. The finish is complex, memorable and exquisitely long-lasting.
