The 2022 release of the Macallan Double Cask 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky was matured in both European and American sherry seasons oak casks. The European casks provide a subtle spice and the American oak gives the balance of delicate vanilla, together delivering a whisky with a sweeter, warmer taste and character. Flavours of dried fruits, ginger and toffee are prominent throughout.

The Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old is a honeyed, indulgent and rounded single malt, its character defined by the un mistable prominence of the American Oak style. A beautiful partnership, as sunshine and rain create a spectacular rainbow, so the pairing of sherry seasoned European and American oak casks combine in a perfect harmony of flavours and natural colour. The Macallan brings new oak from America across thousands of miles to Spain, where casks are crafted and sherry seasoned before travelling to our distillery in Speyside. Here they are filled with the new make spirit and left to mature for twelve years. These whiskies are then harmoniously united with those aged in exceptional sherry seasoned European oak casks. Colour of Harvest Sun, the Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old shows off an aroma of creamy butterscotch with a hint of toffee apple, candied orange, vanilla custard and newly felled oak. On the palate, one will enjoy honeyed wood spices and citrus, balanced with raisins and carmel. A warm, sweet and drying lingering oak finish rounds this beautiful scotch out.

This distinguished single malt is matured for thirty years in Oloroso sherry seasoned oak casks from Jerez, Spain. Telling the story of Scotland’s world-famous Hogmanay festivities celebrated annually on 31st December, A Night on Earth in Scotland captures the universal joy of celebrating the change of year. This seasonal release is a collaboration with acclaimed Japanese-French illustrator Erica Dorn, whose artwork has featured in director Wes Anderson’s films. The single malt is presented in unique packaging to provide a special unboxing experience and Dorn’s playful abstract illustrations are inspired by the historic fire rituals dominant in New Year celebrations around the world. A Night on Earth in Scotland is created from a selection of The Macallan’s exceptional American and European oak sherry seasoned casks, along with American ex-bourbon barrels to deliver its rich, sweet shortbread-like character. A whisky referencing the rich Scottish delicacy traditionally gifted and eaten at Hogmanay, punctuated by festive notes of dried orange and spice.

Following on from the duo of Rich Cacao and Fine Cacao comes the second instalment in Macallan's limited annual series. 'Intense Arabica' and 'Smooth Arabica' are said to be influenced by the Ethiopian Arabica coffee bean. Both special malts exude flavours of sweet oak, tiramisu and dark chocolate and reportedly provide a delightful whisky and coffee pairing experience. The story goes that Chief Whisky Maker, Steven Bremner wanted to create an expression that would pair perfectly with an espresso, so he worked with a group of caffeinated experts including Ethiopian grower Kenean Asefa Dukamo, Scottish roaster Lisa Lawson and acclaimed American barista Andrea Allen. “Exploring the world of coffee with our masters in the industry, who shared their knowledge, creativity, and love for their art, was both an education and an inspiration,” says Bremner. “There are many parallels between the approach to creating incomparable whisky and coffee. Each requires unique skills and craftsmanship to achieve depth and complexity of taste and both worlds aim to deliver an extraordinary consumption experience.” Each whisky was aged in a combination of American and European oak casks but have different accents. As the name suggests, Smooth Arabica brings a creamy, silky character to Macallans malt, retaining the dark spice and heavy fruit we've come to expect. Also one for the collectors to complete the set. Drawing inspiration from a connection to the natural world, the distinctive packaging incorporates organic by-products and gives them new life. These are made partially from repurposed coffee bean husks, created by Italian paper mill, Favini. Very limited stocks.

An affectionate history of a whisky, it expressively chronicles bygone crafts of the generations that made it. Those lucky to meet it will never forget their rendezvous. Subtly smoky and brooding it may be, but the whisky possesses the spark and breeding of a true Macallan. In its honour, its new home is hand crafted from black Lalique crystal. The Macallan M Black 2022 release is utterly unique. Precious, peat infused single malt, Lalique finesse and lateral creativity are married seamlessly.
