In 1898, John Duff built the Speyside Distillery, BenRiach. It is one of the few distilleries with its own on-site floor malting and draws its water from the Burnside Springs. Benriach is one of only seven distilleries in Scotland that continues to produce a whisky from 100 per cent malted barley, carrying on a centuries-old tradition. In the case of Malting Season 2, it carries the legacy started by Benriach Malting Season 1 that first launched in 2021, and is crafted from concerto barley, chosen by Master Blender Rachel Barrie for its wholesome cereal flavour. Smoky whiskies are not traditionally associated with Speyside, but look back through its distilleries’ archives and it’s clear that heavily peated single malts were the preferred palate of the region back in the 19th century. Both intensely smoked and exquisitely sweet, the special edition has been two-cask matured in both American virgin oak and bourbon barrels - wood types intentionally selected to amplify the toasted sweet notes in Benriach’s smoky spirit. Celebrating the time of year where peated spirit runs through Benriach stills, a tradition revived by the distillery over 50 years ago, Smoke Season is a small batch release which captures one of Benriach’s time-honoured production techniques. Both intensely smoked and exquisitely sweet, the special edition has been two-cask matured in both American virgin oak and bourbon barrels - wood types intentionally selected to amplify the toasted sweet notes in Benriach’s smoky spirit. With a new recipe finely tuned by Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie, this expression is the most intensely smoked whisky to be released by the distillery. Caramel smoke, oak spice and citrus peel lead on the nose followed by flavours of smoked dark vanilla, seared apple and cinnamon on the palate with lingering charred orange into a sweet and smoky finish.

The Smoky Twelve is the perfect marriage of fruit,malt, oak and rich layers of smoke. Crafted from a combination of unpeated and peated spirit and three cask matured for at least twelve years in bourbon barrels, sherry casks, and Marsala wine casks. The whisky from each cask is then expertly married together to create a smooth, creamy single malt, multilayered with flavours of ripened fruit, aromatic smoky sweetness and warming oak spice. Burnished gold in colour the nose starts with smoked vanilla, charred orange and toasted almond. The palate leads with rich dark chocolate, fruit peel, brown sugar and smoked oak, lingering into a cocoa and orange smoked finish.

During long maturation, Benriach’s sweet Speyside smoke mellows and integrates with the fruit, malt and oak. After twenty one years, rich layering develops into an elegant honey smoke, enriched through multi-layered cask maturation. The whisky from each cask type, imbued with particular flavour characteristics, is then expertly married together to create a rich and elegant single malt, layered with lush orchard fruit and toasted pine wood with a honey smoke finish. Once distilled, the Benriach 35 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is filled into casks and allowed to mature on-site in the distilleries traditional, stone-walled, earthen-floored dunnage warehouse. This provides the perfect conditions for the whisky to age. The resulting whisky has aromas of luscious tropical fruit salad syrup with back notes of chocolate and mints. A classic Speyside palate blending waves of dried apricots and papaya with hints of golden syrup and distant milk chocolate. A long and elegant finish.

This intricate character is interwoven with dark notes of chocolate, rich plum, and smooth walnut from port casks sourced from the Douro Valley in Portugal. The result is the ultimate expression of our signature, luscious, fruit-laden style. The colour is a deep bronze. The nose richly fruity, with the exquisite scent of sweet orange, plum, and honey pomelo laced with dark chocolate coated berries layered on smooth walnut and cherry liqueur. On the palate flavours of luscious orchard fruits, silky morello cherry, soft nectarine, stewed red apple, and white peach, lingering into the seductive velvety walnut and kumquat finish.
