Soft coastal aromas of dune scrub leap off the nose, split lime leaf, coastal daisy and salt bush mingling with bright sage and bruised lemongrass. The flavour delivers in waves, with fragrant lime zest and sea salt adding complexity to the notes of native oregano and coastal daisy. The finish is long with pops of pepper berry and pine.

The first impression of the palate is of richness and depth. Further exploration shows layers of toasty oak and some dark chocolate flavours, along with pleasant mint and blackcurrant. The wine is mouth filling with great length.

Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz is a very powerful, concentrated cellaring style with plenty of fruit richness, chocolaty tannins and underlying malty oak. The 1.6 hectare Block 6, which forms part of the Kay Brother's larger 22 hectare Amery Vineyards, was originally a "pumpkin patch" of old bush vines. The Block 6 fruit is batch-vinified in three to five tonne traditional open fermenters originally built by the Kay Brothers in 1895/6. Some parcels are hand plunged while others are fermented under header boards. At completion of fermentation the wine is drained and basket pressed into a combination of one-third each new, one year old and two year old American and Eastern European oak. Maturation takes place for around 18 to 24 months before assemblage and bottling under screw cap.

Full of body, and incredibly long, it nevertheless finishes with remarkable freshness. Tasting Notes Aroma Dense, classic Shiraz characters of fresh blackberry, boysenberry and aniseed mesh seamlessly with dried spice and elegant French oak. Palate Concentrated and generous with dark fruits and black cherry, the old vines contribute complex spices, cinnamon and nutmeg. A full bodied, luscious and elegant wine that is perfectly balanced by fine grain tannins and lingering structural finish.

Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is produced from a single vineyard at Coriole, planted in 1919 by Geoffrey Kay. It was first retained as a separate wine in 1989, and is one of Langton's Classified Wines of Australia. This vineyard typically produces a wine of great intensity and can be cellared for many years. The wine is matured in French oak with typically about 40% new.
