Adnams Broadside Strong Original
The Broadside is made in tribute to a fierce naval battle between the English and Dutch in 1672. The English fleet was moored in Southwold at the time, home to the Adnams Brewery, legend has it most of the sailors were in a tavern when they were called to arms. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish.
Old Speckled Hen
A high proportion of Crystal malt in Old Speckled Hen provides the key toffee/caramel flavour. The yeast used to ferment the beer provides the other key character - estery or banana/pear drop. This estery note provides the fruity and refreshing balance. The hops used add a palate cleansing herbal note and very slight orange citrus.
