Retasting brings it back into perspective, the two varieties bonded, yet each preserving its varietal integrity and structural architecture. Block 6 was hand-picked from the 125 year old vines on the 21st and 30th of March 2017, producing a healthy and clean crop of 11.37 tonnes. The grapes were crushed, de-stemmed and plunged twice daily while spending 11 days on skins in our traditional open fermenters. The wine was then basket pressed and matured for 20 months in 40% new French and American oak puncheons. Bottled in February 2019.

Rich and opulent displaying aromas of deep plum and black cherry with hints of complex herb and delicate oak spice. The palate is full flavoured yet elegant with dark fruits and bright red berries, framed by firm, structural tannins and moreish acidity.

Two of the vineyards contributing to this wine are named "Inkwell"! A solid clue as to the wine's colour lies right there. One of the benchmark reds of McLaren Vale, The Vicar impresses yet again. Not just a big, dark thing, balance and buoyancy of fruit separate if from the pack of huge local reds. Careful cellaring has seen a touch of cured meat flavour emerge to complement the ample black, plummy, chocolate and spiced fruit cake layering. Cellar as long as you like or drink now with a prime cut.

A new label and new take on a classic. The Eileen Hardy Shiraz is juicy, plump and full of life with a magnificent backbone of tannin and spice without being overbearing. A classic in the making.
