Vintage: The 2018 growing season started slowly, but warmer weather eventually helped to speed things up. Fruit set throughout the region was good and the low rainfall and warm weather from January to April resulted in great sugar development, while a cooler than average March offered ideal night temperatures for colour and flavour development. In 1980, Geoff left the then family company, Thomas Hardy and Sons, to make his own way in the Australian wine world. Geoff and fellow viticulturalist Ian Leask purchased the promising Pertaringa vineyard in McLaren Vale. A few years later, Geoff found the perfect location for producing cool climate grapes in the Adelaide Hills. He planted the vineyard in 1987 and named it K1 since this unique site was the first commercial planting of vines in the Kuitpo region in the southern Adelaide Hills. Each year the wine is made it is labelled according to the last two digits of the vintage -- hence Reserve Bin 10A, 12A, 13A and so on. Fruit is hand-picked to small bins and whole-bunch pressed. A portion of the juice is incrementally filled to barrel directly from the press and allowed to undergo a natural fermentation. Thus ...every new (40%) and seasoned (one or two-year-old) French oak barrique is its own, unique 225-litre ferment. Enhanced mouthfeel and complexity is achieved by maturation (typically for eight months) on solids, with intermittent yeast lees stirring. The 100% malolactic fermentation is also natural. Reserve Bin A has established a strong following since it was first made in 1994. It is a fresh, minerally style that occupies a place in the vanguard of modern Australian Chardonnay. With its distinctive, flinty aromatics, creamy texture and razor-sharp acidity, it perfectly articulates the fruit complexity and mouth-watering attributes of cool-climate Adelaide Hills fruit from Chardonnay vineyards across the region.
